Democrat Callie Barr holds fundraiser to support congressional campaign bid

MARQUETTE, Mich. (WLUC) – A Democratic congressional candidate hosted a fundraiser and discussion of campaign issues in downtown Marquette.

Democratic candidate Callie Barr is running for Michigan’s 1st Congressional District seat. She hopes to challenge Republican incumbent Jack Bergman, who is seeking re-election. Barr discussed her experiences living in Michigan and perspectives entering the campaign.

“I have traveled this district and I have met good people, people who care and people who are working really hard. And sometimes it’s really easy to spot the issues, but it’s time that we’re part of solutions and we’re seeing each other as neighbors and as Americans first,” Barr said.

She said being a teacher, attorney, military spouse, and mother contributed to her choice to run. Barr discussed issues such as income inequality, access to health and childcare, and the housing crisis.

She would first have to win the Democratic primary in August before advancing to the general election in November.
